Today I'm thinking about needs and schedules, and how the one might be the key to the other. In other words, while I've talked before on this blog about what's been a fairly effective approach to scheduling for my family , working with a new dog has sparked a fresh set of epiphanies that I can only wish I'd had while my children were still at home. Mind you, everyone seems to have survived my not having had these epiphanies earlier. I am not the perfect mother; I was not the perfect mother-educator. I made plenty of mistakes that I can identify in hindsight, and I'm sure I made a lot more than that. It's probably good that I remain unaware of many of my own failings, because it would be easy to obsess about them, especially now when it's too late, and in any event, God's grace truly is sufficient where we ourselves are insufficient. I've discussed the fact that all conditioning has to do with replicating desired behaviors, while not setting the person up to replicate negative ones. I've written before about Charlotte Mason and neuroscience, particularly what we understand about the brain's building neural pathways that over time make repeated behaviors automatic, on the level of reflex . In dog training, this looks like avoiding triggers that send Dora over her emotional threshold: crating her when new people come over, for example, and turning on a white-noise machine to screen out the unfamiliar voices, so that she doesn't get to rehearse manic let-me-at-them barking as a response. It looks like choosing walk times that minimize our chances of running into strange people and dogs, especially unexpectedly. She can pass people peacefully on the greenway trail, but if someone comes up behind us at close range, especially if they want to stop and talk about what a good little dogg...
